But what is “Ubu” you ask? Ubu is the creation of the late nineteenth century mind of Alfred Jarry. Known for his eccentricity and love of bicycles, absinthe, ether, and guns, Alfred Jarry was the forefather of all plays absurdist. Originally written when he was but a mere school boy, Ubu Roi, Jarry’s first play, was a parody of Shakespeare and his incompetent but well meaning physics teacher Hebert. Utilizing puppetry, poop jokes and a healthy dose of profanity, this play opened in Paris in 1896 and instantly caused violent reactions from the crowds who had gathered to see it. Only lasting for two performances, the play made Jarry famous (or infamous) overnight and he eventually created two more Ubu plays, Ubu Cocu and Ubu Enchaîné. Each of the three plays shows a different side of Ubu: the man who represents all that is wrong with humanity.
