This Italian Renaissance fable by Gozzi tells how Barbarina and Renzo, Tartaglia's twin children, spirited away at birth and long presumed dead, find their way back to Monterotondo and happiness; how their good mother, buried for 18 years under the palace drain, gets out, and how a singing apple, among other miracles, helps restore order to the realm. If the fantastical plot challenges belief at every turn, the spectacle it has inspired has seductions galore. A magical mix of commedia and fantasy this comedy defies classification.
